Biology

Blood typing virtual lab.

The blood test finds out whether a sample of blood carries the A, B and Rh antigens, read from how the blood clumps with antibodies against A, B and D.

In this virtual biology lab the student takes a blood sample, puts a drop in each of three dishes, adds Anti-A, Anti-B and Anti-D and stirs each dish with a clean stick. How the blood clumps in each dish shows which antigens it carries, and the student names the blood type.

Blood Test

What students learn.

  • Find out blood types in the laboratory.

Step by step.

The steps the student follows in the app, with what the lab shows at each one.

  1. 1

Choose a blood sample: tap one of the tubes, or tap the lancing pen to take a sample of your own blood.

    Observation

Red blood cells carry markers on their surface, called antigens. Blood is typed by three of them: antigen A, antigen B and the Rh factor.

  2. 2

Take the blood with the dropper and put a drop in each of the three dishes.

    Observation

There are three dishes because the blood is tested three times: once for each of the three antigens.

  3. 3

Throw the dropper in the bin.

    Observation

Whatever has touched blood is thrown away safely and is never used again. A lancet is used only once, too.

  4. 4

Add a different solution to each dish: Anti-A, Anti-B and Anti-D.

    Observation

Each solution holds antibodies against one antigen: Anti-A against antigen A, Anti-B against antigen B, and Anti-D against the Rh factor.

  5. 5

Stir each dish with a clean stick, a new one for each dish, and watch the blood.

    Observation

Where the antibodies meet their antigen they join the red cells together in clumps: this is called agglutination. Where the blood does not carry that antigen it stays smooth.

  6. 6

Look at the three dishes and choose the blood type.

    Observation

Clumps with Anti-A mean antigen A, and clumps with Anti-B mean antigen B: both make the type AB, and neither makes it O. Clumps with Anti-D make it positive (+); none makes it negative (-).

The result

AB+

Read from the three dishes: this sample clumped with Anti-A, Anti-B and Anti-D. Each sample is an unknown the student has to work out.

Blood Test: the results card with + under Anti-A, Anti-B and Anti-D, the type AB+ chosen, and “Correct: this blood is AB+.”

Built for the board at the front of the class.

Most classrooms already teach from an interactive screen. Gnosis Labs is made for it first, so the whole class can follow one experiment together. The same labs run on tablets, phones and PCs.

Every word on the screen and every spoken instruction comes in both languages. Arabic reads right to left.
